Asbestos Mining and Its Tragic Legacy

For most of the twentieth century, asbestos was sold as one of the wonders of the industrial age. It would not burn. It resisted heat, acid, and electricity. It could be spun into cloth, pressed into board, or mixed into cement, and it was cheap and abundant. Advertisements called it the magic mineral. Only slowly, and at a terrible human cost, did the world learn that the same fibres that made asbestos so useful also made it deadly to breathe.

What asbestos actually is

Asbestos is not a single substance but a family of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals. The forms mined commercially fall into two groups. Chrysotile, or white asbestos, is a serpentine mineral with soft, curled fibres and accounts for the great majority of asbestos ever used. The amphibole group includes amosite, usually called brown asbestos, and crocidolite, known as blue asbestos, both with straighter, needle-like fibres.

What these minerals share is a crystal structure that splits lengthwise into fibres thousands of times finer than a human hair. That fineness is the source of both their usefulness and their danger. Woven or bonded, the fibres gave heat resistance and strength. Airborne, they were small enough to travel deep into the lungs and stay there.

The rise of the magic mineral

Large-scale asbestos mining took off in the late nineteenth century, as industry, railways, and shipping created enormous demand for insulation and fireproofing. Over the following decades asbestos found its way into thousands of products. It lagged pipes and boilers, lined brake pads and clutches, reinforced cement sheets and roofing, and was sprayed onto steel frames as fire protection. It was in floor tiles, textured ceilings, gaskets, and even some household goods.

Demand climbed steadily through the mid-twentieth century, peaking in many industrial countries in the decades after the Second World War. For a time asbestos seemed to embody progress itself: a natural material that made buildings safer from fire and machines more durable. That reputation would prove to be one of the most costly misjudgements in industrial history.

The dust that kills

The tragedy of asbestos lies in a cruel gap between cause and effect. When asbestos-containing materials are cut, drilled, crushed, or simply left to crumble with age, they release microscopic fibres into the air. Inhaled, those fibres lodge in the lung and the tissues around it, where the body cannot easily break them down or expel them. Over years and decades they can trigger serious, often fatal disease.

Three conditions are most closely associated with asbestos exposure. Asbestosis is a scarring of the lung tissue that stiffens the lungs and makes breathing progressively harder. Lung cancer occurs at raised rates among the exposed, particularly when smoking is added to the risk. And mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen that is strongly linked to asbestos and has few other known causes.

What makes these diseases so insidious is their long latency. Symptoms may not appear until twenty, thirty, or even forty years after the fibres were breathed in. A worker exposed as a young man might fall ill only in old age, long after leaving the industry, when the connection to a distant job is easy to overlook. This delay allowed the danger to be denied and minimised for far longer than it should have been.

Wittenoom: a town undone

No place captures the human cost more starkly than Wittenoom in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. From the 1930s and especially through the 1940s and 1950s, Wittenoom was built around the mining of crocidolite, the blue asbestos considered among the most hazardous of all. A whole community grew up in the gorge, with families living amid the tailings.

The mine closed in the 1960s as it became unprofitable, but the contamination did not leave with it. Blue asbestos dust remained in the soil, on the roads, and across the surrounding land. In the decades that followed, many former workers and residents died of asbestos-related disease. Authorities eventually took extraordinary steps: services were withdrawn, the town was removed from official maps, and it was effectively degazetted so that it no longer existed as an official settlement. The site remains hazardous and off limits, a rare case of a town erased because the ground itself is dangerous.

A global industry, a global problem

Wittenoom was the most notorious site, but asbestos mining was a worldwide enterprise. Canada was long one of the largest producers of all, so central to the trade that a Quebec town was literally named Asbestos. That town, uncomfortable with the association as attitudes changed, was renamed Val-des-Sources in 2020. Russia has been among the leading producers of chrysotile, and southern Africa was a major historic source, including of the amphibole varieties now known to be especially dangerous.

Because asbestos was traded and used globally, its legacy is global too. The fibres mined in one country were shipped, milled, and built into structures on every continent. The disease burden followed the same routes, appearing among miners, factory workers, builders, shipyard labourers, and their families, and sometimes among people whose only exposure came from living near a mine or a plant.

Bans, restrictions, and a divided world

As the medical evidence became undeniable, one country after another moved to restrict or ban asbestos. Many nations, particularly across Europe and in Australia, now prohibit its mining, import, and use outright. Yet the picture is not uniform. Asbestos is still mined and used in some parts of the world, often defended on the grounds that certain forms can be handled safely under controlled conditions, a claim that public-health authorities in banning countries broadly reject.

This split means the tragedy of asbestos is not simply a matter of history. In places where it is still produced and installed, the long clock of latency is still ticking, and the illnesses of the coming decades are being seeded now.

Living with the legacy

Even in countries that banned asbestos long ago, the problem has not gone away, because so much of it is already in place. Vast quantities remain in older buildings, in insulation, roofing, flooring, and pipe lagging installed before the bans took effect. As long as these materials are intact and undisturbed, they are generally considered low risk. The danger comes when they are damaged, or during renovation and demolition, when hidden fibres can suddenly be released.

Managing this inheritance has become a specialised field. Surveys identify where asbestos is present, and trained, licensed workers remove or safely enclose it under strict controls. Homeowners are warned not to disturb suspect materials themselves. It is slow, expensive, and unglamorous work, but it is the direct consequence of decisions made when the mineral was still called miraculous.

Remembering the cost

The story of asbestos is a warning about how a material can be embraced for its virtues while its dangers are ignored or suppressed. It is also, above all, a human story, one measured in shortened lives and grieving families across many countries. Memorials, support groups, and compensation schemes in numerous nations now honour those who fell ill, and campaigners continue to press for a worldwide end to mining and use. Treating that history with honesty is part of making sure it is not repeated.
