Falun Copper Mine: A Deep Dive into Sweden's Industrial Cradle
The Great Copper Mountain at Falun produced two-thirds of Europe's copper at its 17th-century peak, financed Sweden's brief age of military greatness, and gave its name to a paint colour that still defines the Scandinavian landscape.
Medieval origins
Copper extraction at Falun is documented from the 13th century. A 1288 deed of share transfer is the world's earliest evidence of corporate share ownership.
The 17th-century boom
By the mid-1600s Falun produced two-thirds of Europe's copper. Royal taxes on the mine funded the wars of Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII — the brief Swedish Baltic empire was largely financed from this single hole in the ground.
The Great Pit
On Midsummer Day 1687 a vast section of the mine collapsed into a 95-m-deep open pit. Miraculously, because it was a feast day, no one was killed. The Great Pit remains the most spectacular feature of the surface site.
Falu rödfärg
The mine's iron oxide waste, fired in roasters, produces 'Falu red' — the deep red paint that has covered Swedish wooden houses since the 16th century. Production continues today on the original site.
Working life and death
Output was bought at the cost of extraordinary occupational hazard: rock-falls, burns from roasting works, and respiratory disease. The fossilised body of 'Fet-Mats' Israelsson, killed in a 1670 collapse and preserved in vitriol, was found and displayed in 1719.
Closure and museum
Active copper extraction continued for over a thousand years; the mine closed in 1992. UNESCO inscription followed in 2001.
The visitor experience
Visitors descend 67 m to the Creutz Shaft, walking through galleries that retain medieval tool marks. The surface museum is excellent on the metallurgical and social history.
The town of Falun
The 17th-century town that grew around the mine retains its quirky red-painted wooden architecture and a beautifully preserved central square.

Falun anchors the central Swedish Bergslagen iron- and copper-mining region — combine with Sala silver mine and Engelsberg ironworks (also UNESCO) for a deep heritage week.
