Top 10 Mines in Canada

Canada is one of the world's largest mining countries by production and reserve size. Its heritage ranges from the Klondike gold rush to the Canadian Shield nickel and copper deposits that powered two world wars, to the Athabasca diamond fields and the uranium mines of Saskatchewan that shaped the nuclear age. These ten sites represent the breadth of that history.

1. Dynamic Earth / Big Nickel, Sudbury, Ontario

The Big Nickel is a nine-metre-diameter replica of a 1951 Canadian nickel coin, the landmark of the Dynamic Earth science centre at Sudbury's science north precinct. Nickel-copper commodity; the surrounding Sudbury Basin mines are active, operated primarily by Vale and Glencore. Dynamic Earth offers a cage descent into a real mine tunnel beneath the science centre, with interpretive displays covering Sudbury's geological history — the basin is a 1.85-billion-year-old meteor impact structure. Sudbury's transformation from one of the most polluted cities in North America in the 1970s to a comparative environmental success story by the 1990s is itself part of the heritage.

2. Klondike Goldfields, Dawson City, Yukon

The Klondike is the most famous gold rush in North American history. Gold commodity; rush period 1896–1899, dredge operations to 1960s, artisanal operations ongoing. Parks Canada's Klondike National Historic Sites include Dredge No. 4 on Bonanza Creek — the largest wooden-hulled bucket dredge in North America — the historic downtown of Dawson City, and the Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek where George Carmack's team staked the original find. Surface access only at dredge and claim sites; fully accessible to independent visitors from June to September.

3. Cobalt Silver District, Ontario

The town of Cobalt in northern Ontario was the site of one of the world's richest silver discoveries in 1903, when construction of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway exposed massive native silver veins. Silver commodity; principal production 1903–1930s, now host to the Cobalt Mining Museum and Heritage Silver Trail. The silver occurred as native metal in spectacular wire and leaf forms that produced some of the finest cabinet specimens of the twentieth century. The Northern Ontario Heritage Museum in Cobalt holds significant collections.

4. Britannia Mine Museum, Britannia Beach, British Columbia

Britannia was one of the largest copper mines in the British Empire, operating from 1904 to 1974 on the steep slopes above Howe Sound north of Vancouver. Copper commodity; permanently closed, now a National Historic Site and museum. The mine's environmental legacy — acidic drainage into Howe Sound — is being remediated by a treatment plant opened in 2005. The museum offers underground mine train tours, mineral processing demonstrations, and an extensive surface heritage precinct. A large collection of original mining machinery is displayed in situ.

5. Macassa Mine, Kirkland Lake, Ontario

Kirkland Lake was Canada's most productive gold camp in the 1930s and 1940s, and Macassa is its last active deep mine. Gold commodity; operated by Agnico Eagle, active to depths exceeding 2,200 metres. The Kirkland Lake Mining Museum covers the district's history, including the famous "Mile of Gold" on which seven major mines straddled the ore-bearing break. Macassa produced approximately 11 million ounces of gold over its history.

6. Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories

Diavik, on an island in Lac de Gras northwest of Yellowknife, is one of the world's most productive diamond mines. Diamond commodity; operated by Rio Tinto since 2003, production ongoing. No public access; the mine is built on an arctic island and reached by ice road in winter and air year-round. As a heritage context, Diavik and the adjacent Ekati mine (the first Canadian diamond mine, opened 1998) are significant for demonstrating the economic capacity of the Canadian north and the land-use debates involving Dene and Tlicho First Nations.

7. Cigar Lake, Saskatchewan

Cigar Lake is the world's highest-grade uranium mine, with average ore grades of around 15 percent uranium — compared to a global average of less than 0.1 percent. Uranium commodity; operated by Cameco Corporation, active since 2014. No public access. The mine uses jet boring and ground freezing to access ore beneath a water-bearing zone that caused major flooding during construction. Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin contains the world's most concentrated uranium deposits; the nearby McArthur River mine (also Cameco) is the second highest grade globally.

8. Cape Breton Miners' Museum, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia

The Cape Breton Miners' Museum at Glace Bay is one of the finest coal heritage institutions in North America. Coal commodity; Sydney coalfield active from 1720s to 2001 (last Cape Breton colliery). The museum offers an underground tour through the Ocean Deeps Colliery, guided by retired miners. The Cape Breton coalfield has one of the most politically charged labour histories in Canada, including the 1925 Cape Breton strike, the dominion troops deployed against miners, and the figures of J.B. McLachlan and William Davis.

9. Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Coal was discovered at Nanaimo in 1849 by Hudson's Bay Company factor Joseph McKay, and the city grew entirely around the coal mine. Coal commodity; last mine closed 1968. The Nanaimo Museum covers the city's mining history, and the Bastion — a 1853 HBC fortification — is the oldest surviving building in Nanaimo. The Nanaimo coal mines produced the fuel that powered Pacific Coast shipping and the Canadian Pacific Railway's Pacific operations.

10. Phoenix, Greenwood, and Boundary District, British Columbia

The Boundary district of southern BC was a copper-gold producer in the early 1900s, centred on the smelter town of Greenwood and the mine town of Phoenix. Copper-gold commodity; peak production 1900–1919, Phoenix now a ghost town. Greenwood, which retains its smelter stack and much of its commercial streetscape, bills itself as Canada's smallest city. The Phoenix townsite, at 1,500 metres elevation, is a field of foundations and a cemetery.

The Northern Ontario Mining Corridor

Highway 11 north from Toronto passes through the heart of the Ontario Shield mining district and is one of the most historically rich mining drives in North America. From Barrie northward, the road passes the Temiskaming watershed (the agricultural colony the Ontario government planted in the 1900s to feed the mining towns), through Cobalt and its silver streets, past the Haileybury School of Mines (now Northern College), and on to Kirkland Lake and Timmins. Timmins is the gold camp that Benny Hollinger and Sandy McIntyre staked in 1909 and that the Hollinger Mine worked for decades — it is now memorialised in the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre. The Porcupine gold camp, of which Hollinger was the centre, produced over 67 million ounces of gold over its history.

The Sudbury Basin, at the north end of this corridor, merits its own detour. The impact structure's distinctive geology — with its nickel-copper sulphides concentrated at the margins of the melt sheet — produced one of the richest mineral deposits on Earth. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNOLAB), at 2,070 metres depth in the Vale Creighton Mine, detected the evidence for neutrino oscillation that confirmed neutrinos have mass — a Nobel Prize-winning result in 2015. SNOLAB is now the deepest clean laboratory in the world and continues active physics research in the same rock that built Sudbury.

Planning a Canadian Mining Route

Canada's mining heritage is geographically spread across a country of ten million square kilometres. The Ontario Shield cluster — Sudbury, Cobalt, Kirkland Lake, Timmins — is the most concentrated for heritage visits and manageable as a northern Ontario road trip along Highway 11 over three to four days. The Klondike demands its own journey: Dawson City is best reached via Whitehorse by road or air. The Pacific sites — Britannia, Nanaimo — combine easily with a BC coast itinerary.
