Top 10 Mines in Norway: From Kongsberg Silver to Svalbard Coal

Norway's mining heritage is dominated by the silver veins of Kongsberg and the copper landscape of Røros — both UNESCO-protected — but extends across the Arctic to coal at Svalbard.

Kongsberg Silver Mines

Founded in 1623, these royal silver workings under King Christian IV produced 1.35 million kg of silver. The Christian Stoll train ride and the King's Mine descent are unmissable.

Røros Copper Mines (UNESCO)

A wooden mining town in central Norway, inscribed in 1980, with surface workings, smelter ruins and a preserved townscape from 1646 onwards.

Olavsgruva, Røros

The deepest accessible part of the Røros copper field, with concert acoustics and guided descents to 50 metres.

Sulitjelma Mine, Nordland

An Arctic copper-pyrite field that closed in 1991; today a museum and rare example of Arctic-Circle industrial archaeology.

Folldal Verk

An 18th-century copper, zinc and sulphur mine in eastern Norway, now an extensive open-air museum.

Løkken Verk

South-Trøndelag copper-pyrite mine with a preserved 1654 mining village; tours run by former miners.

Gruve 3, Svalbard

A preserved coal mine on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, descending into permafrost workings near Longyearbyen.

Knaben Molybdenum Mine

A WWII-era molybdenum mine bombed by the RAF in 1943; preserved workings and small museum.

Modum Blaafarveværk

A 17th-century cobalt mine and pigment works near Drammen; cobalt blue from here coloured Wedgwood china and Delftware.

Bjørkåsen Gruver, Ofoten

A pyrite mine near Narvik with surface workings preserved on a steep fjord-side site.

Planning your route

These ten sites span very different climates, languages and accessibility levels. Group them by region, allow a full half-day for each underground descent, and be ready for cool temperatures (around 8–12°C in most galleries). Local guides are often retired miners — their commentary is the single best part of any visit.
