Underground Mine Tours: What to Wear, What to Expect, and What Not to Do

Going underground in a former mine is one of the most viscerally impressive things a heritage visitor can do. The dark, the weight of rock overhead, the smell of damp and sulphide, the scale of excavations that took decades of human labour to create — none of it translates through photographs. But a mine is also a potentially hazardous environment, and the organisations that run show mines have safety protocols that exist for good reasons. Follow them.

What to Wear

The most important single item is footwear. Closed-toe shoes with a firm sole are the absolute minimum; most underground tours require these and will turn you away in sandals or flip-flops. Ankle support is recommended for uneven rock floors. Most show mines issue hard hats at the entrance — these are not optional, even in sections that appear to have generous headroom. Carry a hair tie if you have long hair; hard hats go on over it.

Underground temperatures are remarkably constant regardless of surface season: most European and North American mine heritage sites maintain 8–14°C year-round. In summer, this means a jacket or fleece is necessary even if it is 30°C above ground. In winter it can feel relatively warm. Dress in layers and carry the warm layer even if you do not think you will need it; the guides have seen many visitors become cold and uncomfortable in the second half of a two-hour tour.

If you are prone to getting dirty and the mine involves crawling or close contact with walls, overalls are ideal. Many mines supply them. If not, wear clothes you do not mind ruining — ochre and grey mineral dust does not wash out of everything.

What the Mine Will Provide

Standard equipment issued at show mines includes hard hats, cap lamps (clipped to the hat), and usually overalls if the tour is particularly wet or muddy. Some mines issue gumboots for tours through flooded sections. You should not need to bring your own lighting; most show mines are lit through their main circuits and the cap lamp is backup. However, a personal torch is useful for close examination of wall surfaces and mineral veins.

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is the most common reason visitors leave tours early or decline to participate. If you are uncertain whether you are claustrophobic, inform the guide at the start. A good guide will describe the narrowest sections before you reach them and will have a preferred exit strategy for visitors who become uncomfortable. Most show mine tours have accessible exit points at intervals.

The sections most likely to trigger claustrophobia are not the main galleries (which are typically large enough to walk upright with ease) but access routes where the original workings narrow — crawl-through sections in Welsh slate mines, for example, or the lower levels of hand-worked stopes. Check the tour description before booking. Most operations clearly specify minimum space requirements.

Asthma and Respiratory Conditions

Underground air quality in heritage mines is generally good — show mines maintain ventilation through their original systems. However, some mines have elevated dust levels during active interpretation demonstrations (such as drilling simulations), and a few maintain elevated humidity that can affect some asthmatics. If you have asthma or a respiratory condition, bring your reliever inhaler and inform the guide. Mines in old pyrite-bearing rock can have trace concentrations of sulphur dioxide in areas of ongoing oxidation, usually well below actionable limits but worth noting.

Salt mines are a special case: the halotherapy environment (elevated salt aerosol) is actively marketed as beneficial for respiratory conditions, and there is some evidence of short-term benefit for certain asthma types. The advice is the same: bring your medication.

Age Limits

Most underground mine tours have minimum age requirements that reflect the physical demands of the tour rather than safety per se. The most common limits are 5+ for standard gallery tours and 10+ for more demanding underground experiences. Shaft-descent tours by cage often specify 5+ or even no lower limit, provided the child can follow instructions. Active mine tours — such as Cerro Rico in Potosí — are generally not appropriate for children at all.

Upper age limits are uncommon but relevant for tours involving significant walking distance or ladder sections. If you or a member of your group has mobility limitations, contact the site in advance; most have alternative tour options or accessible sections.

Photography

No-flash photography rules are common in show mines and exist for three reasons. Flash disturbs other visitors' experience of the underground environment, which depends partly on the darkness. In some mines, older photosensitive pigments used in interpretive displays can be damaged by repeated flash exposure. And in a small number of mines with coal dust exposure or early electrical installations, there are formal electrical safety reasons for prohibiting open-flash photography. Phone cameras in automatic mode frequently fire flash without the user realising it; check your settings before you descend.

The Radon Awareness Issue

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium-238 in rock, and it accumulates in enclosed underground spaces. In well-ventilated show mines that are regularly visited, radon concentrations are typically kept well below the occupational action level (300 Bq/m³ in most European jurisdictions). However, former uranium mines, and mines in granite-rich geological settings such as Cornwall, Devon, and parts of Scandinavia, can have higher background radon levels than mines in sedimentary rock.

Former uranium mines that have been converted to show mines — such as the Kowary mine in Poland or the uranium mines of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) in Saxony and Bohemia — measure radon systematically and operate tour programmes only in sections where visitor exposure is within safe limits for the duration of a single tour. For a one- or two-hour visit, these levels represent no meaningful health risk to a visitor. The risk is to guides and staff who work underground daily, and accredited show mines manage this through exposure rotation, monitoring, and restricted access to higher-radon areas.

Cage and Winder Protocols

Shaft descents by cage are the most dramatic element of underground mine visits and the one that generates the most specific questions. Modern tourist cage systems are maintained to current mechanical standards regardless of the historic character of the infrastructure. The cage is not held open while you photograph it — the cage departs on the guide's signal. Keep hands and arms inside the cage at all times during descent and ascent. Do not attempt to exit until the cage has stopped and the guide has opened the gate.

Where a winder engine house is visible (as at the Quincy Mine in Michigan or Geevor in Cornwall), the relationship between the drum, the headframe sheave wheels, and the cage in the shaft is worth understanding before your descent. The guide will typically demonstrate or explain the system at the surface.

If the Tour Does Not Feel Right

Any underground heritage tour at a reputable site will have a qualified guide who takes safety seriously. If instructions are unclear, ask for clarification. If you feel unwell underground, tell the guide immediately — do not attempt to manage it alone. Every show mine has emergency protocols and first-aid provisions.
